It is reassuring for vitiligo patients that this study showed no alarming results for both the development of COVID-19 and the associated symptoms. This study is not yet conclusive on the relative risk of COVID-19 in vitiligo compared to controls, due to the low number of controls. Additional research is still required. However, this study does provide insight into the course of COVID-19 in vitiligo patients and its influence on vitiligo disease activity. Patients with vitiligo who developed COVID-19 had a more extensive vitiligo, less often took medication for an autoimmune disorder, less often washed their hands and were less often in home isolation compared to vitiligo patients who did not develop COVID-19. In addition, this study does not show any alarming signals regarding disease progression after COVID-19. More than a third of the vitiligo participants indicated that their vitiligo had increased after COVID-19, but only 6 participants changed their vitiligo therapy. In the majority of vitiligo patients, vitiligo remained stable after COVID-19 (61.3%).

This research shows the value of close collaboration with patient associations, they can reach a large group of patients in a short time and know what questions patients have, which speeds up research and can remove concern in time. The experience we have gained in this study is therefore of great importance for future research, in order to be able to act quickly on questions from patient groups and society.
